As the commanding general in Europe during World War II, it wasn’t immediately apparent that some day Dwight D. Eisenhower would be a two-term president of the United States.

Although a famous general, and some people did talk about Eisenhower running for president, many past presidents who had been generals had not been entirely successful. For every George Washington there was an Ulysses S. Grant.

Eisenhower’s strategic and tactical military genius throughout the war, however, led to the defeat of fascism in Europe and laid the groundwork for decades of prosperity in western Europe.

It was the leadership skills Eisenhower honed during the war, however, that made him one of the top presidents in U.S. history. From the economy to civil rights, the country as a whole prospered.
